Resume

Fiona O’Halloran is an East Coast-based artist and writer. A defining feature of their art is the question of what marks a work as complete, as influenced by their experience with the fluxuations of compulsion and attention. In their view, while a work made in a studio can be held to a higher standard of complexity and signification, a work made on the street provides a unique record of a moment, catalogued in impulsive line-making and smears of watercolor. Its messiness marks it as human in a way that the artifically generated can never replicate.

Narratively, childhood myth-making and magical realism hold a great interest for Fiona. They’re interested in introspective protagonists whose curiosity takes them outside the bounds of the safe and understood; if lucky, they may do so with a companion.

A tree Fiona has learned about recently is the sweetgum tree. While not a great source for turpentine, one could certainly make an effort if one felt like it. In the meantime, it provides great shade, and mere knowledge of a word like “copalm balsam” is satisfaction enough.

“What if one happens to be possessed of a heart that can’t be trusted --?

What if the heart, for its own unfathomable reasons, leads one willfully and in a cloud of unspeakable radiance away from health, domesticity, civic responsibility and strong social connections and all the blandly-held common virtues and instead straight towards a beautiful flare of ruin, self-immolation, disaster?

If your deepest self is singing and coaxing you straight toward the bonfire is it better to turn away? Or is it better to throw yourself head first and laughing into the holy rage calling your name?”

- Donna Tart, The Goldfinch

“Tell me this: why does it happen that at the very, yes, at the very moments when I am most capable of feeling every refinement of all that is ‘sublime and beautiful,’ as they used to say at one time, it would, as though of design, happen to not only make me feel but to do such ugly things, such that… Well, in short, actions that all, perhaps, commit; but which, as though purposely, occurred to me at the very time when I was most conscious that they ought not be committed. The more conscious I was of goodness and all that was ‘sublime and beautiful,’ the more deeply I sank into my mire and the more ready I was to sink in it altogether.”

- Fyodor Dostoyevsky, “Notes from Underground”

“Who has never killed an hour? Not casually or without thought, but carefully: a premeditated murder of minutes. The violence comes from a combination of giving up, not caring, and a resignation that getting past it is all you can hope to accomplish. So you kill the hour. You do not work, you do not read, you do not daydream. If you sleep it is not because you need to sleep. And when at last it is over, there is no evidence: no weapon, no blood, and no body. The only clue might be the shadows beneath your eyes or a terribly thin line near the corner of your mouth indicating something has been suffered, that in the privacy of your life you have lost something and the loss is too empty to share.”

- Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves
