Fiona O’Halloran is an East Coast-based artist and writer. A defining feature of their art is the question of what marks a work as complete, as influenced by their experience with the fluxuations of compulsion and attention. In their view, while a work made in a studio can be held to a higher standard of complexity and signification, a work made on the street provides a unique record of a moment, catalogued in impulsive line-making and smears of watercolor. Its messiness marks it as human in a way that the artifically generated can never replicate.

Narratively, childhood myth-making and magical realism hold a great interest for Fiona. They’re interested in introspective protagonists whose curiosity takes them outside the bounds of the safe and understood; if lucky, they may do so with a companion.

A tree Fiona has learned about recently is the sweetgum tree. While not a great source for turpentine, one could certainly make an effort if one felt like it. In the meantime, it provides great shade, and mere knowledge of a word like “copalm balsam” is satisfaction enough.
